General RO-RO / LI-LO Shipping Conditions and Vehicle Exportation Requirements

When it comes to international shipping, understanding the specifics of Roll-On/Roll-Off (RO-RO) and Lift-On/Lift-Off (LI-LO) shipping is essential for a smooth and efficient process. Whether you're transporting vehicles or heavy machinery, adhering to the conditions and requirements set out by carriers ensures that your cargo reaches its destination without issues. In this blog post, we will break down the general RO-RO/LI-LO conditions and the necessary steps for vehicle exportation.

General Conditions for RO-RO/LI-LO Shipping

  1. RORO Rates and Terminal Handling Charges (THC):

  2. RO-RO/LI-LO rates are based on full liner terms, with applicable load port Terminal Handling Charges (THC) applying. These charges are a key component of the overall shipping cost, so it's important to factor them in when planning your shipment.

  3. RORO Rate Validity:

  4. Rates are valid for 30 days but are subject to change without prior notice. To confirm your rate and secure sailing dates, it's essential to complete your booking through our RORO Booking Portal. Our operations department will follow up with an email confirming space allocation and pricing.

  5. Non-Self-Propelled Vehicle Handling Charges:

  6. If your vehicle is non-operational or non-drivable, an additional handling fee of $125 per vehicle will apply. This ensures the proper handling and loading of such vehicles onto the vessel.

  7. Tow Bar Requirement for Non-Self-Propelled Vehicles:

  8. Non-self-propelled vehicles must be equipped with a tow bar to ensure proper handling throughout the shipping process.

  9. RORO Tariff Coverage:

  10. The standard tariff covers the transportation of drivable used or new passenger vehicles, as well as light-duty trucks and vans weighing less than 8,600 lbs and measuring under 2.39 meters (94 inches) in height.

  11. High and Heavy Machinery Charges:

  12. For heavier or oversized cargo, arbitrary charges apply, especially for transshipment destinations. These charges will be confirmed via email at the time of booking, ensuring transparency before cargo acceptance and payment.

  13. Exclusion of Additional Port Charges:

  14. It is important to note that rates do not include additional port charges, such as loading, unloading, or securing (strapping) the cargo. These charges will be confirmed when the booking is processed.

  15. Insurance Coverage (Optional):

  16. Insurance is available upon request and is highly recommended. For further details, visit our insurance page.

  17. Disclaimer on RORO Rate Confirmation:

  18. Pricing is confirmed only after the receipt of a booking request. While the provided information is as accurate as possible, rates are subject to change without prior notice. However, once your cargo is received or confirmed by our operations team, rates will be locked in for 30 days. Confirmation is typically sent within 24 to 72 hours via email. Use the RORO Booking Portal to initiate the booking process.

Requirements for Vehicle Exportation

Exporting a vehicle or machinery involves several important steps. Here is what you need to provide to process your exportation smoothly:

  1. Required Documentation:

  2. To process your vehicle, machinery, or boat with the U.S. Customs and confirm rates and sailings, we require the following:

    • Title/Bill of Sale: Scan or photograph the front and back of your title or bill of sale and email it to [email protected] for preliminary review.
    • Picture I.D. and Passport: Provide a copy of your picture I.D. and the passport's ID page, including the passport number and country of issue.
    • Original Title and Power of Attorney: Courier the original title and power of attorney to: 2250 NW 96th Avenue, Suite 206, Miami, FL 33172, only when instructed. Please avoid using postal services for these documents.
    • Export Power of Attorney Form: Complete the form available here.

  3. Booking Confirmation Process:

  4. After submitting your booking request, you will receive a confirmation number and invoice within 24 to 72 hours. Your quoted rates are not confirmed until this process is completed. Upon confirmation, you will receive an appointment for delivering the vehicle to the port, along with a booking number and sail date. Payment must be made before delivering the vehicle to the dock.

  5. U.S. Customs Inspection:

  6. Once your vehicle is delivered to the port, U.S. Customs will inspect the paperwork at least 5 days before loading. Full payment must be made prior to loading. The bill of lading will be sent to you approximately two weeks after the ship departs.

  7. Timely Submission of Documents:

  8. To avoid any delays, it is important that all required paperwork and payments are submitted on time. This ensures that your vehicle is loaded without issues.

Announcements for RORO Shippers

  1. Shippers Car Export Declaration (SED):

  2. If your cargo value exceeds $2,500, we will file a Shipper's Export Declaration (SED) on your behalf. For this, you'll need to provide a Corporate I.D. Number (EIN), or if you're an individual, an exporter number from the IRS. We will assist in providing the necessary link for this process. For non-U.S. citizens, a foreign passport will be required.

  3. Packing List:

  4. A detailed packing list is mandatory and can be generated using our Packing List Portal. This document helps ensure the accurate processing of your shipment.

  5. Tracking Your RORO Shipment:
